Antigenbindningsstället, also known as the antigen-binding site or paratope, is a specific region on an antibody molecule that is responsible for recognizing and binding to an antigen. This site is located at the variable region of the antibody, specifically at the tips of the two "arms" of the Y-shaped antibody structure. The antigen-binding site is formed by the hypervariable regions of both the heavy and light chains of the antibody, which together create a unique three-dimensional structure.

The shape and chemical properties of the antigen-binding site are complementary to a specific part of the antigen, called the epitope. This complementarity is crucial for the high specificity of antibody-antigen interactions, akin to a lock and key mechanism. The binding is typically non-covalent, involving various forces such as hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions, and van der Waals forces.

When an antibody binds to an antigen at its antigen-binding site, it can trigger a cascade of immune responses. These responses can include neutralization of toxins or pathogens, opsonization to facilitate phagocytosis, or activation of the complement system. The diversity of antigen-binding sites, generated through genetic recombination and somatic hypermutation, allows the immune system to recognize and respond to a vast array of foreign substances. The study of antigen-binding sites is fundamental to understanding adaptive immunity and developing immunotherapies and diagnostic tools.
