Antifortification

Antifortification is a term that describes opposition to the construction or maintenance of fortifications. These structures, such as walls, ramparts, and defensive barriers, are historically built to protect a place or people from attack. Those who advocate for antifortification may do so for a variety of reasons, ranging from practical and economic concerns to philosophical and political objections.

One common argument against fortifications is their cost. Building and maintaining extensive defensive structures can be extremely expensive, diverting resources that could be used for other public services or development. Furthermore, fortifications can sometimes be ineffective against modern military technology, rendering their expense a poor investment. From a strategic standpoint, some argue that fortifications can channel an enemy's attack, making them more concentrated and potentially more devastating if breached.

Philosophically, antifortification can stem from a belief in openness, free movement, and cooperation rather than division and exclusion. Critics might argue that fortifications create a sense of separation and mistrust, both internally within a community and externally with neighbors. In some contexts, antifortification might be linked to broader anti-militaristic or pacifist sentiments, viewing any form of defensive structure as inherently aggressive or provocative. The concept can also apply to non-military contexts, such as opposing barriers to trade or the erection of digital firewalls that limit access to information.
