Antifeudalism

Antifeudalism is a broad term encompassing various historical and theoretical movements that opposed the feudal system. This system, prevalent in medieval Europe and other parts of the world, was characterized by a hierarchical social structure based on land ownership, reciprocal obligations between lords and vassals, and a generally agrarian economy. Antifeudal sentiments and actions arose from different sources and manifested in diverse ways throughout history.

Peasant revolts were a common form of antifeudalism. Driven by grievances such as heavy taxation, oppressive labor demands, and a lack of social mobility, peasants often rose up against their lords. While these revolts rarely led to the complete dismantling of the feudal system, they demonstrated widespread discontent and could force concessions or temporary reforms. Examples include the Jacquerie in France and the Peasants' Revolt in England.

Beyond popular uprisings, antifeudalism also appeared in intellectual and political critiques. Thinkers and reformers sometimes questioned the legitimacy of inherited privilege, the divine right of kings, and the inherent inequalities of feudal society. These critiques laid the groundwork for later ideologies such as liberalism and socialism, which further challenged the foundations of feudal and aristocratic power. The rise of centralized monarchies also played a role in weakening feudal lords and their independent power bases, contributing to a gradual erosion of the feudal order. Ultimately, antifeudalism represents a persistent thread of resistance against systems of inherited status and concentrated power.
