Antiessentialism is a theoretical stance that challenges the idea that social categories such as race, gender, ethnicity, or nationality have fixed, intrinsic essences. In contrast to essentialist accounts that posit universal traits or natural hierarchies, antiessentialists emphasize variation within groups and context-dependent returns of classification.
