Antibiotikumra is not a widely recognized term in English-language medical literature. It may appear as a localized variant, a plural form of 'antibiotikum' in some languages, or a misspelling of 'antibiotics'. In general, the word refers to medicines that inhibit the growth of or kill bacteria. Antibiotics can be natural products produced by fungi and bacteria, synthetic chemicals, or semi-synthetic derivatives designed to target bacterial processes.

Antibiotics work by interfering with essential bacterial functions such as cell wall synthesis, protein synthesis, nucleic acid replication, or metabolic pathways. They are classified into several major groups (beta-lactams, macrolides, tetracyclines, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, glycopeptides, sulfonamides, etc.). Some are bactericidal, killing bacteria; others are bacteriostatic, inhibiting growth to allow immune clearance. Their spectrum ranges from narrow, effective against specific species, to broad, affecting many.

Clinical use requires appropriate selection based on infection site, suspected organism, local resistance patterns, and patient factors. Inappropriate use and incomplete treatment contribute to antimicrobial resistance, a major public health threat. Stewardship programs aim to optimize antibiotic use, reduce resistance, and minimize adverse effects. Resistance mechanisms include enzymatic drug inactivation, target modification, efflux pumps, and permeability changes.

Safety and monitoring: adverse effects can include allergic reactions, gut microbiota disruption, and organ toxicity in some drugs. Regulatory oversight ensures appropriate prescription and access; ongoing research seeks new antibiotics and alternative therapies.
