Antibiotikumcsoport refers to a classification of antibiotics based on their chemical structure and mechanism of action. Understanding these groups is crucial for effective treatment of bacterial infections, as different groups target different types of bacteria and have varying resistance patterns.

The beta-lactam group is one of the most common and includes penicillins and cephalosporins. They work by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Aminoglycosides, such as gentamicin, are another important group that interfere with bacterial protein synthesis. Macrolides, like erythromycin, also target protein synthesis but bind to a different part of the bacterial ribosome. Tetracyclines, another protein synthesis inhibitor class, are broad-spectrum antibiotics. Fluoroquinolones, such as ciprofloxacin, inhibit bacterial DNA replication. Sulfonamides and trimethoprim are often used in combination and interfere with folic acid synthesis, which is essential for bacterial growth.

The choice of antibiotic group depends on the identified or suspected bacteria causing the infection, the site of infection, patient factors like allergies and kidney function, and local resistance patterns. Misuse or overuse of antibiotics can lead to the development of antibiotic resistance, making infections harder to treat. Therefore, antibiotics should only be used when prescribed by a healthcare professional and for the duration recommended.
