Antartica

Antarctica is the southernmost continent and Earth's fifth largest. It is almost entirely covered by a vast ice sheet, making it the coldest, driest, and windiest continent. Its name comes from the Greek word Antarktikos, meaning "opposite Arctic".

The continent is a polar desert, receiving very little precipitation. Despite its harsh climate, Antarctica supports a unique ecosystem of wildlife, including penguins, seals, whales, and various species of krill and fish. The surrounding Southern Ocean is rich in marine life.

Antarctica is not owned by any single country. Instead, it is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System, signed in 1959. This treaty designates the continent as a scientific preserve and prohibits military activity and mineral exploitation. Research stations from many nations are located across Antarctica, conducting vital studies in fields such as glaciology, meteorology, and astronomy.

Human presence in Antarctica is primarily limited to scientists and support staff at these research bases. Tourism is also a growing industry, with visitors typically arriving by ship during the Antarctic summer months. The continent plays a crucial role in regulating global climate and ocean currents.
