Anpassungsgrenzen, also known as adaptation limits, refers to the point at which natural or human systems can no longer cope with changes, particularly those related to climate change. These limits represent thresholds beyond which adaptation is no longer feasible or effective. When adaptation limits are reached, societies and ecosystems may face irreversible damage or collapse.

For natural systems, adaptation limits can manifest in the inability of species to migrate or adapt genetically to altered environmental conditions. Coral reefs, for example, face bleaching and eventual death when ocean temperatures rise beyond a certain threshold, representing a critical adaptation limit. Similarly, forests can succumb to prolonged drought and increased pest outbreaks, exceeding their resilience.

In human systems, adaptation limits can be seen in the failure of infrastructure to withstand extreme weather events, or the inability of agricultural practices to maintain yields in changing climates. For instance, coastal communities may eventually be unable to adapt to rising sea levels through costly and increasingly ineffective measures like building higher sea walls. Societal capacity, economic resources, and technological availability all play a role in determining human adaptation limits. Exceeding these limits can lead to displacement, increased poverty, and social instability. Understanding and respecting these boundaries is crucial for effective climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.
