Anksiolyyteillä, commonly known as anxiolytics, are a class of psychoactive drugs used to treat anxiety disorders. They primarily function by depressing the central nervous system, leading to a calming effect. The most well-known and widely prescribed class of anxiolytics are benzodiazepines, which include medications like diazepam, lorazepam, and alprazolam. These drugs work by enhancing the effect of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which inhibits nerve activity in the brain.
