Anksiolüütiliste, also known as anxiolytics or anti-anxiety drugs, are a class of medications used to treat anxiety disorders and related conditions. They work by reducing the activity of the central nervous system, which can help to alleviate symptoms such as worry, fear, panic, and nervousness.

The most common type of anxiolytic is the benzodiazepine class, which includes drugs like alprazolam (Xanax), lorazepam (Ativan), and diazepam (Valium). These medications work by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that inhibits brain activity. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), primarily used as antidepressants, are also often prescribed for anxiety disorders due to their effectiveness in managing chronic anxiety. Beta-blockers, typically used for heart conditions, can also be prescribed to manage the physical symptoms of anxiety, such as rapid heart rate and trembling.

Anxiolytics are typically prescribed by a healthcare professional and should be used cautiously due to potential side effects and the risk of addiction. They are often part of a broader treatment plan that may include psychotherapy.
