Anion exchange resins are typically made of a solid polymer matrix, often a polystyrene divinylbenzene copolymer, to which positively charged functional groups are attached. These positively charged sites attract and bind to the negatively charged anions in the solution, effectively replacing them with other anions, often hydroxide (OH-) or chloride (Cl-), which are initially present on the resin.

The process of anion exchange is a reversible chemical reaction. When a solution containing anions passes through a bed of anion exchange resin, the anions in the solution are adsorbed onto the resin's functional groups. Simultaneously, anions originally bound to the resin are released into the solution. The effectiveness of an anion exchange resin depends on factors such as the resin's capacity (the total amount of anions it can hold), its selectivity (its preference for certain anions over others), and the operating conditions like pH and flow rate.

They are crucial in water treatment for demineralization, removing harmful anions like nitrates and sulfates, and in the production of ultrapure water for industries such as electronics and pharmaceuticals. Regeneration of the resin is typically performed by flushing it with a concentrated solution of the desired exchangeable anion to displace the adsorbed anions and restore the resin's capacity.
