Anion exchange is a reversible chemical process where anions in a solution are exchanged for other anions held on a solid matrix. This matrix usually contains positively charged sites that attract anions. Common materials exhibiting anion exchange capacity include certain types of clays, ion-exchange resins, and humic substances in soils.

In soil science, anion exchange capacity influences the availability of essential nutrients to plants, such as nitrates and phosphates. A higher anion exchange capacity can help retain these mobile anions, preventing their leaching from the soil and making them accessible for plant uptake. Conversely, a low anion exchange capacity can lead to nutrient losses, impacting agricultural productivity and water quality.

In water treatment, anion exchangers are employed to remove undesirable anions like sulfates, nitrates, arsenic, and fluoride from drinking water or industrial wastewater. By passing contaminated water through a bed of anion exchange material, the target anions are adsorbed onto the material, resulting in purified water. The capacity of the material to exchange anions determines its effectiveness and the frequency with which it needs to be regenerated. Regeneration typically involves flushing the material with a concentrated solution of a different anion, displacing the adsorbed anions and restoring the exchange capacity.
