Anestesiövervakning, often translated as anesthesia monitoring, is a critical component of the anesthetic process, ensuring patient safety and optimizing the delivery of anesthesia. It involves the continuous observation and measurement of a patient's physiological status during surgery or other procedures requiring anesthesia. The primary goals of anesthesia monitoring are to detect and respond to changes in the patient's condition, prevent complications, and guide the anesthesiologist in adjusting anesthetic agents and support.

Standard monitoring typically includes assessment of the patient's breathing, circulation, and neurological state. This involves the use of various devices. Pulse oximetry measures blood oxygen saturation, while capnography monitors end-tidal carbon dioxide levels, providing insights into ventilation and circulatory status. Electrocardiography (ECG) tracks heart rate and rhythm, and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring is used to assess hemodynamic stability. Temperature monitoring is also important, especially during long procedures or in pediatric patients.

More advanced monitoring techniques may be employed depending on the patient's condition and the complexity of the procedure. These can include invasive arterial pressure monitoring, central venous pressure monitoring, and depth of anesthesia monitoring, which aims to quantify the level of consciousness and responsiveness to stimuli. The anesthesiologist uses the data from these monitors to make informed decisions about anesthetic management, ensuring the patient remains stable and comfortable throughout the procedure. Effective anesthesia monitoring is a cornerstone of safe surgical practice.
