Andromonoecious

Andromonoecious describes a plant species that has both male and hermaphrodite flowers on the same individual plant. This condition is a form of monoecy, which refers to the presence of both male and female reproductive structures on a single organism. In andromonoecious species, some flowers will possess only stamens (the male reproductive organs), while others will have both stamens and pistils (the female reproductive organs). This allows for both self-pollination (if the hermaphrodite flowers are capable of it) and cross-pollination through the male flowers.

This reproductive strategy is found in a variety of plant families and genera, including some members of the Cucurbitaceae (gourd family), such as cucumbers and squash, and certain species of legumes. The prevalence and distribution of andromonoecy are influenced by ecological factors, pollination biology, and genetic control. The development and allocation of resources to male versus hermaphrodite flowers can be a complex trade-off for the plant, impacting reproductive success and evolutionary trajectory. Understanding andromonoecy is important in plant breeding and agriculture, as it can affect yield and the ease of controlled pollination for hybrid seed production.
