Andmest

Andmest is a term used in speculative computing to denote a modular framework for interoperability among heterogeneous data sources. It is defined as an abstraction layer that enables unified querying, transformation, and governance across distributed datasets, without requiring a single monolithic storage system. The name is a coined word combining elements intended to evoke conjunction and aggregation.

The concept first appeared in theoretical writings in 2023, and while no widely adopted implementation exists, several open prototypes have been described in hypothetical case studies.

Andmest consists of four core components: a schema registry and descriptor language, a query planner that can translate high-level intents into executable plans across adapters, a plugin-based data adapter layer for databases, data lakes, and APIs, and a policy engine for access control and data governance.

Key features include cross-source query execution, data provenance and lineage, and privacy-preserving transformations such as data masking and differential privacy options.

Typical applications are enterprise analytics, government open-data portals, and research data sharing initiatives that require interoperable access to diverse data stores.

Challenges include complexity of setup, potential performance limitations for large-scale workloads, and governance needs to prevent data sprawl and ensure compliance.
