Andacollo

Andacollo is a Chilean commune and city in the Elqui Province of the Coquimbo Region. The commune centers on the town of Andacollo and includes surrounding rural areas. It lies in the Andean foothills northeast of La Serena, within the arid to semi-arid zone of north-central Chile. The landscape features mountainous terrain with dry vegetation and clear skies typical of the region.

The name Andacollo is of uncertain origin, commonly attributed to indigenous languages, and the area has a long history of mining activity that shaped its development. In contemporary times, mining remains a key economic driver for the locality, with the Andacollo copper mine located nearby as a major employer. Agriculture and small-scale commerce also support the rural portions of the commune.

Culturally, Andacollo is best known for the Virgen de Andacollo, a Marian statue housed in the local church. An annual festival dedicated to the Virgen de Andacollo attracts thousands of pilgrims from across Chile and abroad. The event, centered in January, is one of the country’s most significant religious pilgrimages and features Masses, processions, markets, and musical performances.

Administration in Andacollo follows the Chilean municipal system, with a municipal council led by an alcalde (mayor). The commune is part of Elqui Province in the Coquimbo Region and is connected to La Serena and other centers by regional roads and bus services.
