Amrit

Amrit is a given name of Indian origin, derived from the Sanskrit amṛta meaning "immortal" or "nectar." The form Amrit is common in Punjabi-speaking and other North Indian communities; a feminine variant is Amrita.

In Hindu mythology, amrita refers to the nectar of immortality, sought by the gods in the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). In Sikhism, amrit denotes the sacred nectar used in Amrit Sanchar, the baptism that initiates a person into the Khalsa. The ceremony is conducted by the Panj Pyare, who stir water with a double-edged sword and administer amrit to the initiate, symbolizing commitment to spiritual discipline, equality, and service.

In contemporary usage, Amrit is a widely used personal name in India and among the diaspora. Notable individuals bearing the name include Amrit Kaur (1892–1964), an Indian freedom fighter, physician, and the first female health minister of independent India.
