Amplitudmodulatsioonis

Amplitudmodulatsioonis, also known as amplitude modulation (AM), is a modulation technique used in electronic communication, most commonly for transmitting information via a radio wave. In AM, the amplitude of a carrier wave is varied in accordance with the amplitude of the signal that is to be transmitted. This variation in amplitude is what encodes the information onto the carrier wave.

The process of AM involves the multiplication of the carrier wave with the modulating signal. The resulting waveform is then transmitted. At the receiving end, the modulated signal is demodulated to recover the original signal. This is typically done using an envelope detector, which extracts the amplitude variations from the carrier wave.

AM is widely used in broadcasting, particularly for radio and television. It is relatively simple to implement and requires less bandwidth compared to other modulation techniques. However, it is more susceptible to interference and noise, which can degrade the quality of the received signal.

The advantages of AM include its simplicity, low cost, and the fact that it can be easily demodulated using simple circuits. However, its disadvantages include its susceptibility to interference, limited bandwidth efficiency, and the fact that it can only transmit a single channel at a time.

In recent years, AM has largely been replaced by more advanced modulation techniques such as frequency modulation (FM) and digital modulation schemes. Despite this, AM remains in use in certain applications, particularly in shortwave broadcasting and in some forms of amateur radio.
