Amplitudivärähtelyyn, often translated as amplitude variation or amplitude modulation, refers to changes in the intensity or magnitude of a periodic phenomenon over time. This phenomenon is commonly observed in physics, engineering, and signal processing. In the context of wave phenomena, such as sound waves or electromagnetic waves, amplitude variation means that the peak displacement or strength of the wave fluctuates. This fluctuation can be regular, following a specific pattern, or irregular and seemingly random.

In signal processing, amplitude variation is a key concept in modulation techniques. Amplitude modulation (AM) is a method used in electronic communication, most notably for transmitting information via a radio carrier wave. In AM, the amplitude of a high-frequency carrier wave is varied in proportion to the waveform of the message signal being transmitted. This allows information encoded in the message signal to be carried by the radio wave to a receiver, where it can be demodulated and extracted.

Beyond communications, amplitude variation is relevant in the study of oscillations. For instance, in a damped harmonic oscillator, the amplitude of the oscillations decreases over time due to energy dissipation. Conversely, in a driven oscillator, external forces can cause the amplitude to vary, sometimes leading to resonance where the amplitude can become very large if the driving frequency matches the natural frequency of the system. Understanding and controlling amplitude variation is crucial for the design and analysis of many technological systems and for interpreting natural phenomena.
