Amplifikation (often rendered as amplification in English) is the process of increasing the magnitude or strength of something. The term appears across disciplines, from engineering and biochemistry to communications and linguistics. While the underlying mechanisms differ, the common goal is to produce a larger, often more usable or detectable, effect from a smaller input.

In electronics, amplification uses active devices such as transistors or operational amplifiers to raise signal amplitude. Key concepts include gain (the ratio of output to input), bandwidth, linearity, noise, and distortion. Amplifiers are categorized by function as voltage, current, or power amplifiers and are essential in radios, audio systems, and instrumentation.

In biology and chemistry, nucleic acid amplification refers to methods that replicate DNA or RNA to detectable levels. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the foundational technique, enabling exponential amplification through cycles of denaturation, annealing, and extension. Isothermal methods (e.g., LAMP, RPA) perform amplification at a constant temperature. Applications include diagnostics, cloning, and forensics.

Amplification also occurs in signal transduction, where enzymatic cascades amplify a signal within a cell, and in chemical kinetics via autocatalytic reactions. In information theory and media studies, amplification describes how messages gain reach through repetition and sharing, sometimes leading to disproportionate influence relative to initial input.

The concept dates to early electronic amplifiers and has expanded with advances in molecular biology and communications. Practical challenges include noise, distortion, saturation, and the need to maintain fidelity or specificity. Understanding the context and limits of amplification is essential in design and analysis.
