Amorfisille

Amorfisille is a natural, non-crystalline silicate material characterized by the absence of long-range atomic order. Its composition is primarily silicon dioxide (SiO2) with variable amounts of hydroxyl groups and trace impurities such as aluminum, iron, and magnesium. The name derives from the Greek amorphos meaning "without form" and from silica, reflecting its amorphous structure.

Occurrence and formation: Amorfisille forms in high-temperature, silica-rich environments where rapid cooling or fluid interactions prevent crystallization. It has been reported in quenched volcanic glasses, altered rhyolites, and hydrothermal vent zones, where it can occur as fine powders or micro- to nano-scale aggregates. It can also be produced synthetically through sol-gel processing or high-temperature quenching of silicate melts.

Structure and properties: As an amorphous solid, amorfisille lacks a long-range crystal lattice. It typically appears colorless or pale grey and ranges in density similar to other amorphous silica materials (about 2.1–2.2 g/cm3). The Mohs hardness is commonly reported around 5.5–6, with an index of refraction near 1.46. The material often exhibits high porosity and a large specific surface area, depending on its microstructure.

Applications: Due to its high surface area and chemical inertness, amorfisille is studied for adsorption and separation, catalyst supports, and as a filler in polymer composites. Its porous structure makes it a candidate for environmental remediation and sensor platforms.
