Amoreira

Amoreira is a Portuguese municipality situated in the district of Faro, in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. The municipality spans a total area of approximately 148.96 square kilometers and is home to a population of around 5,139 inhabitants as of 2021.

The town of Amoreira is located inland, nestled in a valley surrounded by hills. The town's history dates back to the Middle Ages, with archaeological evidence suggesting human settlement in the area as far back as the Neolithic period. The town's name, Amoreira, is derived from the Portuguese word for "almond tree", which is abundant in the region.

Climate-wise, Amoreira experiences a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot and dry summers, and mild and wet winters. The average temperature ranges from 13°C in winter to 26°C in summer. The area is known for its natural springs and water sources, which are said to have therapeutic properties.

Amoreira is also a significant stop for pilgrims embarking on the traditional journey to the shrine of Romaria in Vila dos Milagres of Ancão. This route is traditionally taken on a donkey or on foot, and has a long history dating back to the 16th century.
