Ammoniumfosfaatti

Ammoniumfosfaatti is a general term that refers to a class of inorganic compounds formed by the reaction of ammonia with phosphoric acid. These compounds can vary in their exact chemical formula depending on the molar ratio of ammonia to phosphoric acid. The most common forms are monoammonium phosphate (MAP) and diammonium phosphate (DAP).

Monoammonium phosphate, with the chemical formula NH₄H₂PO₄, is formed when one mole of ammonia reacts with one mole of phosphoric acid. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water. Diammonium phosphate, with the formula (NH₄)₂HPO₄, is produced when two moles of ammonia react with one mole of phosphoric acid. It is also a white crystalline solid and is highly soluble in water.

Ammonium phosphates are widely used as fertilizers due to their high nutrient content, providing both nitrogen and phosphorus, which are essential macronutrients for plant growth. MAP and DAP are particularly valued for their efficiency in delivering these nutrients to crops. They are also used in other applications, such as in fire extinguishers, where they act as flame retardants by releasing ammonia and water vapor upon heating, which cools the combustible material and dilutes flammable gases. Additionally, ammonium phosphates can be found in some food additives, though their use in this context is less common.
