Ammemet

Ammemet is a figure from ancient Egyptian mythology, often depicted as a composite creature. She is a combination of several animals, typically with the head of a crocodile, the forequarters of a lion, and the hindquarters of a hippopotamus. Her name is sometimes translated as "Devourer of the Dead" or "Eater of Hearts."

Ammemet's primary role was in the Egyptian afterlife, specifically during the Weighing of the Heart ceremony. In this judgment ritual, the heart of the deceased was weighed against the feather of Ma'at, the goddess of truth and justice. If the heart was found to be heavy with sin, Ammemet would devour it, effectively annihilating the soul and preventing it from reaching the afterlife. If the heart was lighter than the feather, the deceased was deemed worthy and could proceed.

She was considered a fearsome entity, a symbol of divine retribution and the ultimate consequence of an unrighteous life. Ammemet was not worshipped as a deity but rather feared as a force that ensured the integrity of the cosmic order. Her presence in the Hall of Two Truths, where the judgment took place, underscored the seriousness of the afterlife's moral examination. She represents the irreversible finality of eternal damnation for those who failed to live a life of truth and righteousness according to Egyptian beliefs.
