Amersham

Amersham is a market town and civil parish in Buckinghamshire, England. It is situated in the Chiltern Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, approximately 27 miles northwest of central London. The town is historically divided into two distinct areas: Old Amersham, a picturesque hilltop village with ancient buildings, and Amersham-on-the-Hill, the modern commercial and administrative center which developed around the railway station.

The earliest recorded mention of Amersham dates back to the 13th century, though evidence of settlement in the area predates this. Old Amersham retains much of its medieval character, featuring a historic market square, St. Mary's Church, and numerous timber-framed buildings. The town played a significant role in the English Reformation, with some of its inhabitants, known as the Amersham Martyrs, being persecuted for their Protestant beliefs.

Amersham-on-the-Hill grew considerably in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly following the arrival of the Metropolitan Railway, which provided a vital transport link to London. This development led to the establishment of shops, housing, and local government offices. Today, Amersham serves as a commuter town for London and retains a strong local economy. The Chilterns surrounding Amersham offer opportunities for walking and outdoor recreation. The town is served by Amersham railway station, a hub for both London Underground and National Rail services.
