Ambani

Ambani is a prominent Indian business family and a surname associated with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), a diversified multinational headquartered in Mumbai. The family’s rise began with Dhirubhai Ambani (1932–2002), a self-made entrepreneur who founded Reliance as a textiles trading and manufacturing venture in the 1960s and later expanded into petrochemicals, refining, and other sectors.

Following Dhirubhai’s death, his two sons, Mukesh Ambani (born 1957) and Anil Ambani (born 1959), inherited the business and split the holdings in 2005. Mukesh Ambani retained the core, including refining, petrochemicals, and later ventures in telecommunications, retail, and energy. Anil Ambani’s group took control of other assets such as Reliance Communications and Reliance Power, which faced substantial financial challenges in subsequent years. Under Mukesh’s leadership, Reliance developed Jio Infocomm, a telecommunications platform that disrupted India's mobile market with affordable 4G services and a broad digital ecosystem, and Reliance Retail, one of the country’s largest retailers.

Reliance Industries' activities encompass refining and marketing, petrochemicals, exploration and production, retail, telecommunications, and energy initiatives. The group has pursued expansion in digital services and consumer businesses while also investing in energy transition and new technologies. The Ambani family has long been among India’s wealthiest and most influential business dynasties, with Kokilaben Ambani playing a central role in family governance and succession.
