Alveolepithel

Alveolepithel refers to the epithelial lining of alveoli, the tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs. This specialized epithelium is primarily composed of two types of cells: type I pneumocytes and type II pneumocytes. Type I pneumocytes are extremely thin and cover about 95% of the alveolar surface. Their flattened structure facilitates the diffusion of oxygen from the air into the blood and carbon dioxide from the blood into the air. They are fragile and susceptible to damage from toxins and mechanical stress.

Type II pneumocytes are larger and more cuboidal, interspersed among the type I cells. While they constitute a smaller surface area, they are crucial for lung health. Type II pneumocytes are responsible for producing and secreting pulmonary surfactant, a complex mixture of lipids and proteins that reduces surface tension within the alveoli. This reduction in surface tension prevents the alveoli from collapsing during exhalation and makes breathing easier. Additionally, type II pneumocytes act as progenitor cells, capable of differentiating into type I pneumocytes to repair damaged alveolar epithelium. The thinness and close association of the alveolepithel with the capillary endothelium form the respiratory membrane, optimizing the efficiency of gas exchange.
