Altovas

Altovas is a coastal town and municipality in the fictional country of Veridia, situated on the western shore of the Veridian Sea. The municipality covers about 48 square kilometers and has a population of around 12,000 as of the latest census. It serves as the administrative center of Veridia’s western coast region and is a local hub for fishing, light manufacturing, and services.

The etymology of Altovas is uncertain. Local tradition attributes the name to an elevated promontory ("alta" meaning high) observed by early mariners, while some historians link it to an ancient trade route that passed through the harbor.

Altovas sits in a sheltered bay with a rocky shoreline and rolling hills to the east. The climate is temperate maritime, with mild, wet winters and cool, dry summers. The harbor is active year round, supporting fishing fleets and small cargo traffic.

Archaeological finds indicate settlement in the medieval period, with the town receiving municipal status in the 15th century. The port expanded during the 18th century trade era, and the town diversified into light manufacturing in the 20th century. Rail and road connections were completed in the late 20th century, boosting regional links.

Today, Altovas relies on fishing and seafood processing, complemented by tourism and crafts. A small ferry network connects the town with nearby islands. Road connections link Altovas to major regional routes and a regional rail line serves the area.

The town hosts annual seafood and maritime culture festivals. Local cuisine centers on fish, shellfish, and roasted vegetables. The population is predominantly Veridian, with small communities of migrants contributing to local services and culture. The municipal government is headed by a mayor and a town council.
