Altena

Altena is a town in the Märkischer Kreis district, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It lies in the Sauerland region along the Lenne river and is part of the Ruhr–Sieg area. The town centers on the hilltop Burg Altena, a medieval fortress that dates from the 12th century and stands above the town on rocky outcrops.

The main landmark is Altena Castle (Burg Altena), which has played a central role in the town’s history and remains a major tourist attraction. In 1912, it became notable as the site of the first youth hostel when German teacher Richard Schirrmann opened a simple shelter for travelers, sparking the worldwide network of youth hostels.

Historically, Altena developed around the fortress and related trade and services. In the modern era it is a small town with a mix of residential areas, agriculture, and small businesses. It is governed as a municipality within the Märkischer Kreis and is connected by regional roads to nearby cities, with larger urban centers such as Hagen and Dortmund within commuting distance.
