Alkylbromider

Alkyl bromides, or alkylbromider as used in some languages, are organic compounds in which a bromine atom is bonded to an sp3-hybridized carbon of an alkyl group (R–Br). They are common reactive intermediates in organic synthesis and are distinguished from aryl or vinyl bromides by the nature of the carbon–bromine bond. The carbon bearing bromine is typically part of a primary, secondary, or tertiary alkyl group, which influences the reaction pathways.

Preparation methods typically involve converting alcohols to bromides, using reagents such as phosphorus tribromide (PBr3) or hydrobromic acid under suitable conditions. They can also be formed by bromination of alkenes or by displacement from tosylates or chlorides. The choice of method depends on substrate, desired rate, and selectivity.

Reactivity of alkyl bromides is largely governed by the bromide leaving group. Primary bromides favor bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN2), while secondary bromides can undergo SN2 or SN1 depending on solvent and nucleophile. Tertiary bromides commonly undergo SN1 or E1/E2 processes, often yielding alkenes in the presence of bases. Nucleophiles such as alkoxides, thiolates, cyanide, or amines can displace bromide, and in some contexts, alkyl bromides participate in the formation of Grignard reagents after halogen exchange.

Applications and safety: Alkyl bromides are widely used as intermediates in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and polymers. Safety considerations include irritation and toxicity, with some compounds (notably methyl bromide) tightly regulated due to health and environmental concerns. Proper handling in well-ventilated areas with appropriate protective equipment is advised.
