Alkuperäsertifikaatit, known in English as Certificates of Origin, are documents used in international trade to declare the country where a product was manufactured or produced. They are essential for customs clearance, determining applicable tariffs, and enforcing trade agreements or quotas. The issuing of these certificates is typically done by a chamber of commerce or a designated government agency in the exporting country.

The purpose of an alkuperäsertifikaatti is to verify the origin of goods, which can have significant implications for import duties, trade preferences, and compliance with regulations. For example, goods originating from countries that have a free trade agreement with the importing country may be eligible for reduced or eliminated tariffs. Conversely, goods from certain countries might be subject to import restrictions or higher duties due to trade sanctions or protectionist policies.

There are generally two types of Certificates of Origin: preferential and non-preferential. A preferential certificate is used when goods qualify for preferential trade treatment, such as under a free trade agreement. A non-preferential certificate simply attests to the origin of the goods without implying any special trade benefits. Both types require the exporter to provide detailed information about the product, including its description, quantity, and country of origin. Importers need these certificates to satisfy customs authorities and to take advantage of any applicable trade benefits.
