As the carbon chain lengthens, alcohols become less soluble in water and their physical state can change, with longer-chain alcohols often being waxy solids.

Alcohols play a significant role in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and as solvents in chemical reactions. They are also vital in biological systems, with ethanol being a product of fermentation and involved in various metabolic processes. The hydroxyl group allows alcohols to form hydrogen bonds, which influences their boiling points and solubility compared to alkanes of similar molecular weight.
