The longest continuous carbon chain is identified, and the positions of any branches are specified by numbers. The suffix "-ane" is added to the name of the parent chain to indicate that it is an alkane. For example, the straight-chain alkane with four carbon atoms is named butane, while the branched alkane with four carbon atoms and a single methyl group is named isobutane.
