Aliakmon
The Aliakmon is the longest river in northern Greece. It is approximately 297 kilometers long and originates in the Pierian Mountains. The river flows southwest through Kozani and the Republic of North Macedonia en route to the Visthica Lake. Here, it retains its name and forms the international border between Greece and North Macedonia. After about 30 kilometers, the Aliakmon flows into a water reservoir near the town of Edessa. From this point, a canal called the Publi or Loudias, leads the river to the shores of the Thermaikos Gulf, a major inlet of the Aegean Sea, and in the process, changes its name to the Loudias.
