Alfambra

Alfambra is a municipality located in the Province of Teruel, part of the autonomous community of Aragón, Spain. It lies in the eastern part of the province, near the boundary with the province of Zaragoza, at an altitude of approximately 752 metres above sea level. The town is situated along the Alfambra River, a tributary of the Segre, which contributes to the agricultural viability of the area.

The history of Alfambra dates back to the Roman era when the region was part of the Iberian Peninsula’s extensive road network. Roman remains, including a partially preserved bridge and inscriptions, have been uncovered during archaeological surveys. During the Middle Ages, the settlement fell under the dominion of the Kingdom of Aragon and later became part of the feudal holdings of the local nobility. The town’s architecture reflects this past, with a central square surrounded by stone houses that showcase typical Aragonese construction techniques.

Agriculture forms the backbone of Alfambra’s economy, with olive oil production, cereal crops, and viticulture being prominent activities. In recent decades, there has been a modest shift toward rural tourism, leveraging the region’s natural landscapes and historical sites. The annual "Feria de la Albalá," held in August, is a significant cultural event that celebrates the town’s agricultural heritage through markets, traditional music, and local gastronomy.

Demographically, Alfambra has experienced a gradual population decline, consistent with wider demographic trends in rural Aragon. The last census recorded a population of approximately 300 residents, with a notable portion of the community engaged in farming and related industries. The municipality is governed by a local council headed by an elected mayor, and it maintains cooperative relationships with neighboring villages for shared services such as education and healthcare.

Notable landmarks include the Church of San Juan Bautista, which boasts a Romanesque nave and a later Baroque bell tower, and the Roman bridge across the Alfambra River, an architectural testament to the engineering skills of antiquity. The surrounding countryside features gentle hills, oak woodlands, and the river's meandering course, providing opportunities for hiking, bird watching, and ecological study.
