They are often used as an adjunct therapy alongside other diabetes medications or as monotherapy in certain cases. The primary benefit of alpha-glucosidase inhibitors is their ability to reduce postprandial hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar after eating.

Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, as these drugs can cause undigested carbohydrates to ferment in the large intestine. These side effects are often dose-dependent and may improve over time. Examples of alpha-glucosidase inhibitors include acarbose and miglitol.
