Common examples include hand sanitizers, surface disinfectants, mouthwashes, and certain cosmetics and solvents where alcohol serves as a carrier or solvent.

Mechanism and efficacy: Alcohol acts by denaturing proteins and dissolving lipids, leading to rapid microbial inactivation. At high concentrations (typically 60% to 95% v/v for ethanol or isopropanol), alcohols are broadly effective against bacteria, many viruses, and fungi. Lower concentrations can be less effective or slower.

Concentration guidance: For hand disinfection, products typically contain 60-80% ethanol or isopropanol; higher concentrations evaporate faster and may be less effective against some spores. For mouthwash, ethanol content ranges widely, often 15-30% in many products.

Safety and handling: Alcohol-based products are flammable and should be stored away from heat and open flames. Prolonged skin contact may cause dryness or irritation; ingestion can be dangerous, particularly with improper formulations; avoid contact with eyes.

Regulation and labeling: In many jurisdictions, alcohol-based hand sanitizers and disinfectants are subject to regulatory oversight; labeling often includes the active ingredient, concentration, safety warnings, and usage directions.

Environmental considerations: Ethanol and isopropanol are biodegradable, but spills require prompt cleanup; wastewater and effluents should be managed according to local rules.
