Albuminvesztés, also known as protein-losing enteropathy (PLE), refers to a condition where the body loses excessive amounts of albumin and other proteins through the gastrointestinal tract. This loss can lead to hypoproteinemia, a state characterized by abnormally low levels of protein in the blood. Albumin, the most abundant protein in plasma, plays a crucial role in maintaining osmotic pressure, transporting substances, and acting as an antioxidant. When its levels drop significantly, it can result in fluid imbalances, edema (swelling), and impaired immune function.

The causes of albuminvesztés are diverse and can include inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, infections like parasitic infestations, lymphatic abnormalities, and certain types of cancers affecting the digestive system. In some cases, the underlying cause may not be immediately apparent, and a thorough diagnostic workup is necessary. Symptoms can vary depending on the severity and underlying cause but often include diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, fatigue, and the aforementioned edema.

Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to measure protein levels, stool tests to detect protein loss or underlying infections, and imaging studies or endoscopic procedures to visualize the gastrointestinal tract and identify any abnormalities. Treatment strategies are aimed at addressing the underlying cause of the protein loss. This may involve dietary modifications, medications to manage inflammation or infection, or surgical intervention in certain situations. Nutritional support, including high-protein diets or intravenous albumin, may also be necessary to restore protein levels and alleviate symptoms.
