Scholars generally link Albanian origin to the western Balkans, with the ancient Illyrian and other Balkan populations forming the historical substrate. The Albanian language is an independent branch of the Indo-European family. It has two main dialect groups, Gheg in the north and Tosk in the south, with the standard literary form based on Tosk.
