Alahärmä

Alahärmä is a former municipality of Finland, located in the region of Southern Ostrobothnia. It merged with the neighboring municipalities of Ylihärmä, Kauhava, and Kortesjärvi on January 1, 2009, to form the new municipality of Kauhava. Alahärmä was situated in the western part of Finland, approximately 60 kilometers north of Vaasa.

The area of Alahärmä was characterized by its rural landscape, with a mix of agricultural fields and forests. The main population center was the village of Alahärmä, which served as the administrative and economic hub of the former municipality. The Härmä river flows through Alahärmä, contributing to the local geography.

Historically, Alahärmä was known for its agricultural traditions and a strong sense of community. The local dialect, a variant of Southern Ostrobothnian, was also a distinct feature of the region. Alahärmä had its own municipal services, including schools, a library, and a health center, which are now integrated into the services of the larger Kauhava municipality.

The former municipality's economy was largely based on agriculture and small-scale industries. While the merger aimed to create a more economically viable and administratively efficient unit, Alahärmä retains its identity as a distinct area within the new municipality of Kauhava. The cultural heritage and local traditions of Alahärmä continue to be preserved by its residents.
