AlMegrahi

Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi was a Libyan intelligence officer and convicted bomber. He was convicted in the Netherlands for the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988. The attack killed all 259 people on board and 11 people on the ground. Al-Megrahi was one of two Libyans indicted for the bombing. He was found guilty in 2001 and sentenced to life imprisonment.

In 2009, al-Megrahi was released from a Scottish prison on compassionate grounds after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. His release was controversial and sparked outrage from victims' families and some governments. He returned to Libya and died in 2012.

The Lockerbie bombing remains a significant event in aviation terrorism. While al-Megrahi was convicted, questions have persisted about the full extent of Libya's involvement and whether other individuals were responsible. Scotland's Crown Office has continued to investigate the case.
