AlMaturidis

Al Maturidi was a prominent theologian and scholar of Islam who lived in the 10th century. He is best known as the founder of the Maturidi school of theology, which became one of the two major Sunni Ash'ari and Maturidi schools of theological thought. Maturidi was born in Maturid, a town in present-day Uzbekistan, and spent much of his life teaching and writing in Samarkand.

His most famous work is the Kitab al-Tawhid (Book of Monotheism), a comprehensive exposition of Islamic creed and theology. Maturidi sought to establish a middle ground between extreme rationalism and rigid traditionalism. He emphasized the role of reason in understanding religious texts, arguing that the intellect is a tool given by God to comprehend His revelations. However, he also stressed the necessity of revelation (the Quran and Sunnah) as the ultimate source of religious knowledge, stating that reason alone is insufficient.

Maturidi's theology focuses on affirming God's absolute oneness (tawhid) and His attributes. He addressed various theological controversies of his time, including questions about free will and predestination, the nature of faith (iman), and the interpretation of divine attributes. He asserted that while God has absolute power and knowledge, humans possess a degree of free will and are responsible for their actions. The Maturidi school significantly influenced Sunni Islam, particularly in Central Asia, Turkey, and South Asia, and continues to be a major theological framework today.
