Maturid

Maturidi is a term that can refer to several related concepts within Islamic scholarship. Most commonly, it is associated with Abu Mansur al-Maturidi, a prominent theologian and jurist of the Hanafi school of law. He was born in Maturid, a village near Samarkand, in present-day Uzbekistan, in the 9th century CE. Al-Maturidi is renowned for founding the Maturidi school of theology, which became one of the two major Sunni theological schools, alongside the Ash'ari school.

The Maturidi school emphasizes the use of reason and intellect in understanding theological matters, while also upholding the authority of the Quran and Sunnah. It seeks a balance between faith and reason, asserting that reason can lead one to knowledge of God, but revelation is necessary for a complete understanding of divine law and purpose. This approach distinguishes it from other theological schools that may place a greater emphasis on tradition or pure textualism.

Theological doctrines associated with the Maturidi school include interpretations of divine attributes, free will and predestination, and the nature of faith. Maturidi thought has had a significant influence on Islamic intellectual history, particularly in Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. The term "Maturidi" can also, less commonly, refer to individuals or places originating from Maturid, the geographical region.
