AlMamn

AlMamn is a fictional city-state in the speculative world of Aridia. Located along the Asha River in the northern desert, it serves as a regional hub for trade and governance. The name is drawn from a traditional term meaning "the fortress" in the local dialect.

Founded around the 12th century by trading clans, AlMamn grew as a caravan crossing point between coastal markets and inland oases. It survived periods of regional conflict and developed a fortified wall and citadel. Independence was reestablished after a century of dynastic upheaval, and the city later joined a loose federation of Aridian states.

AlMamn is governed by a council of elders and a mayor elected for five-year terms. The council houses committees on commerce, security, and culture, and it operates with a legal code influenced by customary law and written statutes.

The city sits in a river valley with palm groves and irrigated fields. The climate is arid, with hot summers and mild winters; irrigation from the Asha supports agriculture and urban water supply.

Its economy centers on trade, crafts, and services. Markets trade textiles, ceramics, spices, and date products. A river port handles small ships and barges, linking inland caravans to coastal commerce.

AlMamn preserves a medieval-inspired architectural style, including the Grand Bazaar and the Citadel of Moonlight. The AlMamn University, founded in 1954, specializes in desert agriculture, engineering, and trade diplomacy. Annual festivals celebrate harvests and mercantile heritage.

The population is diverse, with Aridi, Bahari, and nomadic groups. The city is known for its libraries, mosques, and caravanserais.
