AlHikma

AlHikma, often transliterated as Al-Hikmah, Hikmah, or Hikma, is the Arabic term for wisdom. It derives from the root ḥ-k-m, which conveys wisdom, discernment, and the ability to judge rightly. In standard Arabic, the term covers intellectual insight, moral discernment, and prudent action.

In religious and philosophical contexts, hikmah is a valued virtue. In the Qur’an and Islamic thought, it denotes divine guidance, insight into truth, and the proper application of knowledge. Islamic philosophers stress that true knowledge should be accompanied by wisdom in both theory and practice.

Historically, the phrase Bayt al-Hikmah, or House of Wisdom, refers to the library and translation center established in Baghdad during the Abbasid era. It served as a major hub for scholarly translation, research, and dissemination of scientific and philosophical works, contributing to advances in mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and logic.

Today, Al-Hikma is used as a proper name for organizations, educational programs, publishing ventures, and media outlets in the Arabic-speaking world and beyond. It can denote a general philosophical concept as well as brand or institutional names.
