Alíquotas are a fundamental concept in taxation and finance, representing a portion or percentage of a larger whole. In the context of taxes, an alíquota refers to the tax rate applied to a taxable base. For instance, a sales tax alíquota of 5% means that for every $100 of goods or services purchased, $5 will be collected as tax. Beyond taxation, the term alíquota also appears in mathematics, where it denotes a number that divides another number exactly without leaving a remainder. This is distinct from a divisor, which can result in a remainder. For example, in the set of numbers {2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12}, the number 4 is an alíquota of 12 because 12 divided by 4 equals 3 with no remainder. While the mathematical definition is more precise, the financial and tax-related usage is more commonly encountered in everyday discussions.
