Akylöintireaktioiden, known in English as acylation reactions, are a fundamental class of chemical transformations in organic chemistry. These reactions involve the introduction of an acyl group, which is a functional group with the structure R-C=O, into a molecule. The acyl group is typically derived from a carboxylic acid or a related derivative such as an acid halide or an acid anhydride.

The most common type of acylation reaction is the Friedel-Crafts acylation, which occurs when an aromatic ring reacts with an acyl halide or acid anhydride in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, such as aluminum chloride (AlCl3). This electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction results in the formation of an aryl ketone. Another significant acylation reaction is the esterification of alcohols or phenols with carboxylic acids or their derivatives, forming esters. Similarly, amines can be acylated to form amides.

Acylating agents are the compounds that provide the acyl group. Common acylating agents include acyl chlorides (e.g., acetyl chloride), acid anhydrides (e.g., acetic anhydride), and esters. The choice of acylating agent often depends on the substrate and the desired reaction conditions. Catalysts play a crucial role in facilitating acylation reactions, with Lewis acids being prevalent for Friedel-Crafts type reactions and Brønsted acids or bases sometimes used in esterification and amidation processes.

The products of acylation reactions, such as ketones, esters, and amides, are ubiquitous in organic chemistry and have widespread applications. Ketones are important intermediates and solvents, esters are found in fragrances, flavors, and polymers, and amides form the backbone of proteins and are present in many pharmaceuticals. Therefore, understanding and controlling acylation reactions is essential for synthesizing a vast array of valuable organic compounds.
