Akvarellmålning, often referred to as watercolor painting in English, is an art technique that utilizes pigments suspended in a water-soluble vehicle. The primary binder is typically gum arabic, which allows the paint to be diluted with water, creating translucent washes of color. This characteristic translucency is a defining feature of watercolor, allowing light to reflect off the white of the paper, giving the paintings a luminous quality.

The history of watercolor painting can be traced back to ancient times, with early examples found in Egyptian tomb paintings and Chinese scroll paintings. However, it gained significant prominence in Europe during the Renaissance and particularly flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries, with artists like J.M.W. Turner and John Constable becoming renowned for their watercolor landscapes. The portability of watercolors also made them popular for sketching and plein air painting.

The process of akvarellmålning involves applying thin layers of diluted paint onto paper, usually a heavy, absorbent type specifically designed for watercolor. Artists can build up color intensity by applying multiple washes, or they can achieve subtle gradations and blending by manipulating the water-to-paint ratio and the moisture content of the paper. Techniques such as dry brushing, wet-on-wet, and lifting color are commonly employed to achieve various effects.
