Akvarellipaperi

Akvarellipaperi, also known as watercolor paper, is a specialized paper designed for use with watercolor paints and other water-based media. Its primary characteristics are its absorbency and ability to withstand repeated washes of water and pigment without buckling or disintegrating. This durability is achieved through the composition and manufacturing process of the paper.

Watercolor paper is typically made from 100% cotton or a blend of cotton and cellulose pulp. Cotton fibers are naturally strong and absorbent, allowing the paper to hold a significant amount of water and pigment. The sizing of the paper, a substance added during its production, controls the rate at which water is absorbed. Internal sizing is mixed into the pulp, while external sizing is applied to the surface. The amount and type of sizing affect how the paint behaves on the paper, influencing techniques like washes and dry brushing.

There are three main textures of watercolor paper: cold-press (or "not"), hot-press, and rough. Cold-press paper has a medium texture and is the most versatile, suitable for a wide range of techniques. Hot-press paper is smooth and ideal for detailed work and precise lines, as water does not spread as much on its surface. Rough paper has a pronounced texture, which can add interesting effects and dimension to paintings, particularly for landscapes and impressionistic styles. The weight of watercolor paper, measured in grams per square meter (gsm) or pounds, also indicates its thickness and ability to handle water. Heavier papers (300gsm and above) are generally preferred for watercolor.
