Aktsiaindekseid, or stock market indices, are statistical measures that represent the performance of a group of stocks. The most common type of index is a market-cap weighted index, such as the S&P 500 in the United States or the FTSE 100 in the United Kingdom. In these indices, the value of each company's outstanding shares (market capitalization) determines its weighting. Other types of indices include price-weighted indices, where the price of a stock determines its weighting (e.g., the Dow Jones Industrial Average), and equal-weighted indices, where all stocks in the index have the same weighting.

Stock market indices serve several important purposes. They provide a benchmark against which investors can measure the performance of their own portfolios. Fund managers often aim to beat the performance of a relevant index. Indices are also used as underlying assets for financial products like index funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which allow investors to easily diversify their holdings by investing in a broad basket of stocks. Furthermore, indices are frequently used by economists and analysts to gauge market sentiment and economic conditions. Changes in an index can signal broader trends in the economy, such as investor confidence or the impact of economic events.
